Literacy allows people to read the world rather just the word. It involves using the different forms of communication which give us further opportunities in our society for ourselves, our families and our communities.

Literacy helps us understand the world we live in. It also helps us understand ourselves and express our identity, our ideas and our cultures.

Types of Literacy

Civic Literacy

Understanding your rights and responsibilities as a citizen and being aware of opportunities and ways to get involved; this includes voting, understanding how government works, and knowing the rights and responsibilities of citizens and elected government officials.

Cultural Literacy

Increasing our knowledge and appreciation of the history and contributions of cultures.

Environmental Literacy

Is understanding and appreciating the natural world, and our place in it.

Family Literacy

Literacy activities that take place within the home to provide literacy skill-building opportunities for young children and all members of the family.

Financial Literacy

Having the knowledge, skills and confidence to make responsible financial decisions.

Health Literacy

The ability of individuals to access and use health information to make appropriate health decisions and maintain basic health.

Legal Literacy

The empowerment of individuals regarding issues involving the law, awareness of the processes of the law, and knowledge of available legal resources.

Media Literacy

The ability to think critically about what they see, hear, and read in books, newspapers, magazines, television, radio, movies, music, advertising, video games, the Internet, and new emerging technology.

Physical Literacy

Skills that enable individuals to make healthy, active choices that are beneficial to and dutiful of their whole self, others, and their environment.
